Hill-smith Art Advisory Award for Painting and Drawing Recipient

This body of work explores experiences of body, femininity and sexuality through depictions of personal narratives, contextualised within feminist theories. The painted chairs defy utility, their use suspended with absence of human interaction, and are only valued on their aesthetic quality. This comments on the feminine experience within society, our value defined by our bodies. In images of myself, interacting with chairs as a place holder for the human body, I make myself vulnerable to the male gaze. Yet, I deny a seductive viewing to refuse the standards of purity and objectification I am expected to endure.

You may experience these chairs, and write your own narrative.

Now, society is the rejected object, and we are in power.
